Bill Brooks, the auctioneer who founded Christie's in South Kensington, has died aged 85.

Mr Brooks, whose impact on the antiques world is said to have given rise to TV shows such as Antiques Roadshow, ran the the auction house until his retirement in 1986.

He died on December 9 and is survived by his wife Joan, a daughter and two sons.

Police are caught in a 'cat and mouse' battle with prostitute carding gangs in an effort to prevent Earl's Court become 'the Amsterdam of London'.

Police officers and council cleaners clear the numerous phone boxes in the area around Earl's Court Road of erotic and offensive adverts twice daily but the gangs of 'carders' are so well organised they follow each sweep and plaster the booths again.

Albert Bridge to close for 18 months

Albert Bridge is to shut for renovation for 18 months from Monday February 15.

The grade 2 listed bridge will be closed to traffic while engineers strengthen, paint and resurface the 160-year-old bridge.

LO2101 exhib.JPGGuide Dogs for the Blind has pledged to continue its fight against turning Exhibition Road into a 'shared space' for cars and pedestrians after its legal challenge was rejected.

The charity, which represents blind and partially sighted people, claims plans to remove pavement and give pedestrians the right of way on the busy Kensington road are illegal and dangerous.

Three people escaped from a burning flat in West Brompton in the early hours of this morning.

Four fire engines and 20 firefighters were called to a blaze in a 19 storey block of flats on Blantyre Walk at about 12.20am.
