First allotments in Kensington Gardens for 60 years
For the first time since the second world war an allotment has opened in Kensington Gardens.
The Allotment in Kensington Gardens, launched on Wednesday (26) is also the first to have a bee hive and a hen house.
It will be open to the public throughout the summer, and will be tended by Royal Parks garners and apprentices along with volunteers and community groups.
Tom Jarvis, park manager of Kensington Gardens, said: "We think that it's going to be very popular with visitors, particularly children, and hope that it will inspire lots of people to take an interest in growing their own vegetables.
"The bee hive, which is currently vacant, is 'up for let' and we're hoping that an individual or organisation will be inspired to sponsor it."
There will be a programme of workshops for children teaching them about growing vegetables, about wildlife and sustainability.
Allotment visitors, who can drop by for free, can also get hints and tips from gardeners.
