Benefits fraudster tagged

A benefits fraudster was electronically tagged and given an eight-hour curfew after admitting falsely claiming £12,000 in benefits.

Mary Connors of St Charles Square, Notting Hill, appeared at West London Magistrates Court on Tuesday July 27, after claiming the housing and council tax benefits.

Ms Connors had told Kensington and Chelsea Council that her home was overcrowded because her daughter lived there, and demanded they rehouse her.

But after checking her file, officers found that her daughter, who was employed, had never been declared as living in the family home, and that Ms Connors was falsely claiming for benefits which she was not entitled to.

She originally denied the allegations, but at court admitted three charges of dishonestly obtaining £10,304 in housing benefit and £2,221 in council tax benefit.

She was put on an electronic tag, and ordered to stay at her home address overnight.

Councillor Warwick Lightfoot, cabinet member for finance, said: "This was a case of someone trying dishonestly to manipulate the housing system while at the same time claiming money to which she was not entitled.

"Thankfully officers caught her out and now the court has had its say."
