Letter - petition for cleaner buses
Experts say more than 4,000 people die in London each year due to the effects of toxic air.
Children and older people are especially vulnerable to illnesses caused by pollution including asthma and lung disease.
London faces a big fine from the EU if the situation does not improve - our air is so dirty it is illegal.
Boris Johnson's record on this issue over three years has been woeful.
Readers will be disturbed to learn that 38 schools in the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea are less than 150 metres from the busiest roads carrying more than 10,000 vehicles each day. Many of thousands of local children are breathing polluted air all day.
My six-year-old daughter is at school in North Kensington and while I do everything I can to teach her about road safety there is nothing I can do to stop her inhaling the poisonous fumes that could damage her lungs.
Please sign our petition and call on the mayor to clean up the bus fleet by 2014, get the dirtiest vans and taxis off the road, and make London's streets safer.
The petition can be found at www.petitionbuzz.com/petitions/dirtyboris.
