Borough residents honoured

Ten years ago, after being shocked at the scale of underachievement among Britain's poorest families, Dr Rachel Carr helped to create a community centre in North Kensington offering academic support to youngsters.

The innovative IntoUniversity scheme was a great success which saw new centres opening in Lambeth, Brent, Bow, Haringey, Hackney and Hammersmith.

The charity helps disadvantaged young people by giving them a focus on attaining a university place.

For services to education, Dr Carr has been awarded an OBE.

She said: "I am surprised and delighted to receive this honour and it feels very special that it comes at the start of the year which sees the 10th anniversary of the founding of IntoUniversity.

"It's also really positive for my staff - they are all incredibly dedicated to our charity's mission of raising young people's aspirations and I think this honour reflects everything we have achieved."

Another resident to be awarded an OBE for her services to education is Janette Steel, the headteacher of Chelsea Community Hospital School.

Mrs Steel OBE passionately believes that every child has a right to education while in hospital and over the past 23 years has worked tirelessly with colleagues to provide this.

Originally catering for 10 young people and their families at Westminster Hospital, the school has expanded to four sites - Chelsea and Westminster, Royal Brompton, Collingham Child and Family Care Centre and St Mary's - and has an active community service which sees volunteers teaching youngsters a variety of different skills.

Mrs Steel said: "I was honoured to receive this award, not only for myself but for the many people associated with the Chelsea Community Hospital School who had done so much to demonstrate the impact of an enriched hospital education on the wellbeing and future success of your students."
