Pupils from low income families in UK top 10

Posted by Emma Heseltine on Jan 19, 12 10:21 AM in News in brief

Pupils from low-income families in Hammersmith and Fulham, Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster do better in exams than children in most other boroughs, according to think tank CentreForum.

The three boroughs are ranked in the top 10 in the country, with 61% of pupils from lower income families in Kensington and Chelsea scoring five A* to C grades at GCSE including English and Maths, 56% in Westminster and 51% in H&F.

These rank them first, third and sixth in the UK respectively.

Councillr Elizabeth Campbell, head of education at Kensington and Chelsea Council, said: "Each one of us in the Tri-Borough partnership has succeeded in providing children from less well off backgrounds an excellent education.

"We have known for some time that children in Kensington and Chelsea, who receive free school meals, perform very well in their GCSEs.

"I am very pleased that young people in the three boroughs achieve such good results, in particular those who face disadvantage or additional challenges.

"I believe that high quality teaching in extremely well led schools will always deliver the best results for children and young people, whatever their background."

Are the students actually achieving GCSEs
or BTECs - suspect it is mainly the latter.
