Shireen Olive Ritchie, 62, who joined the House of Lords two years ago, had been ill for some time before she died this week.

A Conservative councillor, she was a member of several council committees, as well as dedicating her time to improving social care and the treatment of both women and children across London.

Sir Merrick Cockell, leader of Kensington and Chelsea Council, said: "I am very saddened to hear the death of Baroness Ritchie. Shireen Ritchie was a much-loved colleague who will be greatly missed by all associated with the council.

"She worked tirelessly to champion the interests of families and children in the Royal Borough and nationally, and was a hugely respected figure in this field.

"My sympathies and that of the council as a whole are with Shireen's family at this sad time."

She leaves behind her husband John, son Oliver, step-daughter Tabitha and step-son Guy.

We'd like to hear from you.

So sorry to hear about darling Shireen's death. I was lucky enough to see her in March. She was the bravest woman I know. We shared a flat as single girls. I shall miss her so much. Liz
