THE TRAGIC pilot who died last week when when his helicopter hit a construction crane on The Tower, One St George Wharf in Vauxhall founded his helicopter hire company in South Kensington.

The firm, Helivision, which Pete Barnes founded in 1998 specialised in helicopter and aircraft hire with professional filming and aerial photography. The business outgrew its Queen' s Gate premises and relocated to Berkshire in Reading.

Helivision had become one of the major players in the lucrative world of private aviation charter in just a little over a decade of operations with Peter Barnes, 50, scoring cameo flying appearances in Hollywood blockbuster, Saving Private Ryan starring Tom Hanks and Bond movie, Die Another Day. His firm also boasted clients like the Dalai Lama, Prince of Wales and many other high networth personalities.

The firm's website carries a personal statement from Barnes about his vast flying experience and aircraft expertise. He wrote: "I have extensive experience of flying from yachts, having flown in Monaco off MY Delfino and have over 200 deck landings to my credit. I have a Business Studies degree, and have been successfully trading with Helivision since inception in 1998."

He also flew on live-saving and rescue missions with the Great North Ambulance Service. Kevin Hodgson who heads the service told the BBC Barnes was one of the best pilots he'd ever flown with.
